Empowering Older New Yorkers with Skills Training and AI: A Governance Model for the Future

In today’s digital age, ensuring that all citizens have access to and can effectively use technology is crucial. This is especially true for older adults, who may be at risk of social isolation and digital exclusion. The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) is addressing this challenge by launching innovative initiatives to enhance digital literacy and provide access to AI tools for older New Yorkers.

NYSOFA’s efforts include online classes and partnerships with technology companies aimed at improving digital and financial literacy, wellness, and social engagement among seniors. For example, AI-powered virtual assistants and robotic pets have been distributed to enhance health outcomes and reduce isolation. These initiatives are critical in ensuring that older adults remain connected and supported in an increasingly digital world.

Through partnerships with companies like GetSetUp, older residents are receiving essential skills training that helps them stay connected and active. This broader strategy leverages technology to improve public service delivery, particularly for vulnerable populations.

In May 2022, NYSOFA partnered with ElliQ to distribute 900 AI-powered virtual assistants to reduce loneliness and improve health outcomes among older adults. Upcoming NYSOFA pilots include AI-driven initiatives targeting older adults with memory loss or dementia, providing tailored content via television to assist in daily tasks and reduce anxiety without medication. Additionally, a new AI-enabled bidet aims to decrease bathroom falls and reduce urinary tract infections among older women. Both projects are set to launch in the next two months.

By offering focused skills training programs and AI solutions similar to those implemented by NYSOFA, governments worldwide can enhance the well-being of their older populations, optimize resource allocation, and improve the overall efficiency of their public service delivery systems.
