A New Capital for New Times: Indonesia is Building the World’s First Smart Forest City

In a groundbreaking response to climate change and urban overcrowding, Indonesia is set to embark on one of the most ambitious capital relocations in history. By September, 11,900 civil servants will begin their move to Nusantara, a new, meticulously planned city over 1,000 kilometers away from the current capital, Jakarta. This relocation is not just a change of address; it’s a visionary leap into the future.

Nusantara, aptly named “The Archipelago,” is poised to become the world’s first “smart forest city.” This extraordinary project aims to address the challenges faced by Jakarta, including overpopulation and sinking land, by shifting the capital to a sprawling 250,000 hectares of forest in the heart of Borneo Island—an area three times the size of Jakarta.

The Nusantara Smart City Blueprint is a comprehensive document that envisions a city where technology, people, and the environment coexist harmoniously. The plans are nothing short of revolutionary: driverless buses supported by a robust 5G network, AI-optimized bus routes to eliminate traffic congestion, and a smart city app that integrates essential public services across health, education, security, and transport sectors.

This initiative represents more than just infrastructure development; it heralds a future where urban living is sustainable, efficient, and deeply connected with nature. Nusantara promises to be a beacon of innovation and environmental stewardship, setting a new standard for what a capital city can achieve.
